Main research areas
The focus of my research is the social history of the legal profession in the 19th century, with a special focus on the professionalisation paradigm in Hungary. Comparative history is part of the interpretative context, in order to find answers to the reasons for Hungarian particularities and to formulate responses to the general features of social history in Central and Eastern Europe. Nevertheless, the history of the legal profession cannot be interpreted without knowledge of the broader middle class, as well as the relationship between lawyers and other legal professions (judges, civil law notaries, legal advisors).
My research focuses on the history of 19th-century photography, with a particular emphasis on the aristocratic family albums and orientalist-style photographs taken in the Mediterranean. The history of the production of photographs and the study of the meaning they convey lies at the boundaries of several disciplines, and it is therefore necessary to draw on the tools of visual communication, media history, Oriental studies and social history to make a meaningful study of this type of documents.
