Project description

The central question of the "ElitData" project supported by the National Research Excellence Program (NKKP) is how the knowledge elite of the Horthy era was recruited, how it was structured, and what role it played in the power structure of society. By analyzing the autonomy and internal configuration of the knowledge elite, we conduct fundamental research addressing the core questions of elite theory—research that has so far been lacking in Hungarian historiography. Our findings will thus contribute to clarifying some of the most important historical questions concerning the Horthy era, including the relationship between political and professional elites, the modes of exercising power, the interplay of ethnic, denominational, and political cleavages within the elites, as well as the dynamics of the nature and extent of discriminatory practices.

Implementation period: January 1, 2026 – December 31, 2029
